Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) argued that Donald Trump’s false claim about a crowd gathered for Vice President Kamala Harris is him “laying the groundwork” to deny the 2024 presidential results.

“Donald Trump may be crazy, but he’s not stupid,” Sanders warned in a statement released Tuesday.

Trump pushed the conspiracy theory on Truth Social that a large crowd gathered at the Detroit airport waiting for Harris was AI-generated, something multiple videos, images, and reporters on the ground have refuted.

Trump used his false claim to brand Harris a “cheater” and to accuse her of election interference, claiming an image of the reflection on the plane proved his claim.

“She should be disqualified because the creation of a fake image is ELECTION INTERFERENCE. Anyone who does that will cheat at ANYTHING!” he wrote.

The Harris campaign quickly responded on Sunday, noting Trump has been absent from swing states for days and asking if this is a “low energy” move from the Republican nominee.

Sanders argued there is a “method” to Trump’s “madness.”

“Clearly, and dangerously, what Trump is doing is laying the groundwork for rejecting the election results if he loses. If you can convince your supporters that thousands of people who attended a televised rally do not exist, it will not be hard to convince them that the election returns in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and elsewhere are ‘fake’ and ‘fraudulent,'” Sanders wrote.

Trump has long maintained without evidence that the 2020 presidential election was also fraudulent even maintaining the conspiracy theory at a Washington D.C. rally just before the Jan. 6 Capitol riot where supporters stormed the Capitol to protest what they claimed was a false election.

“This is what destroying faith in institutions is about. This is what undermining democracy is about. This is what fascism is about,” Sanders wrote. “This is why we must do everything we can to see that Trump is defeated.”
