President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” passed the Senate on Monday evening, despite opposition from several Republican senators and former DOGE head Elon Musk.
The controversial, 1,000-page bill passed by a 51-50 margin, using a tie-breaking vote from Vice President JD Vance, and will now go back to the House of Representatives for a final vote
The bill was voted against by three Republican senators: Rand Paul (R-KY), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Susan Collins (R-ME), and all the Democrats in the chamber.
The bill will now return to the House, where it faced staunch opposition from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), Musk, and, according to CNN, a majority of Americans.
“It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS that we live in a one-party country – the PORKY PIG PARTY!!” wrote Musk on Monday. “Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people.”
Trump threatened to back primary challenges against any Republican who voted against the bill, singling out Tillis in a Truth Social post over the weekend.
“Numerous people have come forward wanting to run in the Primary against ‘Senator Thom’ Tillis,” warned Trump. “I will be meeting with them over the coming weeks, looking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina and, so importantly, the United States of America.”
Last week, Trump also ordered Republicans to “lock yourself in a room if you must” to get the bill passed.
“To my friends in the Senate, lock yourself in a room if you must, don’t go home, and GET THE DEAL DONE THIS WEEK,” he demanded. “Work with the House so they can pick it up, and pass it, IMMEDIATELY. NO ONE GOES ON VACATION UNTIL IT’S DONE.”
