Chris Matthews: ‘Very Reasonable to Assume’ Second Trump Term Becomes Dictatorship

Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews declared on the network that it’s “very reasonable to assume” former President Donald Trump will become a dictator if he gets a second term in the White House.

Matthews joined Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on Morning Joe Wednesday and reacted to a report by The New York Times on Republican leaders calling for “legal retribution” for Trump in the wake of the former president being convicted on more than 30 felony counts in his Manhattan hush money trial.

Scarborough listed off a number of potential situations he fears from a second Trump presidency, including people from his show being arrested and networks being taken off the air. The former president suggested on Twitter that licenses for CNN and NBC should be revoked after they refused to air a speech from him in full. However, cable networks are not actually regulated by the FCC as Trump appeared to believe.

“It’s such a break from your Republican Party, and I mean the former Republican Party,” Matthews told Scarborough, a former Republican congressman.

Matthews framed November’s election as a simple choice between “dictatorship or democracy.”

“He’s unbelievable the way he talks about his opponents and this is exactly the choice we have, a dictatorship or a democracy. We have to choose. This election is about more than abortion,” he said. “It’s about the whole question of what kind of government we’re going to have, what kind of a country do we want to live in. Do we want a dictator who will tell the U.S. Congress don’t do anything about the border, just don’t do anything, let it rock n’ roll, let thousands come through between now and election day.”

Matthews further claimed that if Republicans take both the Senate and House, Trump will simply become a dictator, with the former MSNBC host claiming conservative Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is already “running” the Supreme Court.

“I’m telling you Trump could end up rolling the score. I’ve got the Congress, I’ve got the Supreme Court, I own it all, I am a dictator,” he said. “It’s very reasonable to assume that’s where he’s headed.”
