CNN Analyst Warns ‘Outrageous’ Trump Camp Threat To ‘Come After’ Media Hurts His Chances in 2024
A former Donald Trump campaign advisor and CNN analyst warned that threats of retribution against the media aren’t going to help Trump win votes against President Joe Biden in 2024.
Former Trump administration official Kash Patel told top Trump confidante and ally Steve Bannon that, should Trump appoint him to a top national security role as expected, they “are going to come after the people in the media” who they consider to be “conspirators” with the “deep state.”
The remarks coincide with Trump’s “dictator” response to Fox’s Sean Hannity on Tuesday on the question of retribution.
“This is just not rhetoric. We’re absolutely dead serious,” said Bannon in his podcast interview with Patel.
“Yes, we’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections — we’re going to come after you,” Trump insider Patel vowed.
Speaking with the panel on CNN This Morning, analyst and former Trump campaign advisor David Urban condemned Patel’s promise to go after the press and said that, from a practical standpoint, it does Trump no good in getting new voters in counties where he lost or is having problems.
In commenting on Trump’s remark to Hannity, Urban said that the exchange between Bannon and Patel was even worse, which co-host Poppy Harlow said deserves more attention.
“Can we please talk about what Kash Patel said?” replied Harlow. “I don’t think it’s getting enough attention, right? He had a big role, former counterterrorism advisor and National Security Council would likely have, don’t you think, another position in the Trump administration if he wins.”
“It’s outrageous to say those kind of things. It’s not helpful,” said Urban, calling it outrageous three times.
“By saying those kind of things. Right? That may appeal to a certain segment of the, you know, the primary electorate? But it’s not going to help you win voters in Macomb County or in Bucks County or Montgomery,” he said.
John King implied that Trump could easily “quiet” the talk about the plan he has embraced by claiming Patel doesn’t speak for him, though it’s not clear why anyone would expect Trump to do that.
HARLOW: Can we please talk about what Kash Patel said? I don’t think it’s getting enough attention, right? He had a big role, former counterterrorism advisor and National Security Council would likely have, don’t you think, another position in the Trump administration if he wins. He says “we will go out and find the conspirators, not just in government but in the media. We are going to come after the people in the media who lied about the American citizens.”
URBAN: And look, it’s outrageous. It’s outrageous to say those kind of things. It’s not helpful. It’s outrageous. The only person that could beat Donald Trump in this race is Donald Trump. And by saying those kind of things. Right? That may appeal to a certain segment of the, you know, the primary electorate? But it’s not going to help you win voters in Macomb County or in Bucks County or Montgomery.
KING: It would take one sentence on Truth Social to quiet this. “He does not speak for me. He does not speak for me.” Have you seen that? No.
