CNN Asks Biden Comms Director Whether ‘Chances Are Shot’ for Reelection If ‘You Don’t Improve Your Numbers’
CNN’s Kate Bolduan bluntly asked the communications director of President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign whether a win in November is possible if polling does not improve.
In a Wednesday interview with Michael Tyler, Bolduan noted analysis from data reporter and colleague Harry Enten raising concern about the president’s polling. Earlier this month, he called a New York Times/Siena College poll showing Donald Trump leading Biden in most swing states an “absolute disaster.”
“Do you agree that if you don’t improve your numbers, your chances at winning the White House again are shot?” Bolduan asked Tyler.
The communications director dismissed concerns about polling and insisted Biden’s campaign has done more on the ground to connect to voters than Trump’s campaign.
“Yeah, what I’m telling you is that this campaign is doing the work to win Black voters and all voters who are going to decide the pathway to 270 electoral votes in November,” he said. “That’s what our sustained efforts are geared towards. They’re not geared towards moving a poll in April or May of 2024, it’s geared toward maintaining consistent, long-term relationships with the voters who are going to decide this election. There’s only one campaign that is doing that on a consistent basis.”
Bolduan noted Enten recently highlighting Trump’s gains with Black voters, saying his boost in November could be “historic.” In the poll, Trump had doubled his support among Black voters from 2020, while Biden had seen a slight dip. The president still holds a more than 60-point lead among Black voters, but Enten argued it’s the best a Republican has performed in the area in a long time.
“This would be by far the best performance for a Republican candidate among Black voters in a generation, two generations, probably since 1960 and Richard Nixon against John F. Kennedy,” he said.
