CNN’s Van Jones Predicts ‘Game Over’ for Biden If He ‘Messes Up’ at First Debate: ‘This Is the Entire Election’
CNN commentator Van Jones argued the June 27 debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump is “the entire election” and could end up being “game over” for the president.
“This is the entire election as far as I’m concerned,” Jones told CNN’s Jim Acosta on Thursday. “If you are a carbon-based life form, you’re going to be watching. If you’ve got a functioning brain stem, you’re going to be watching.”
Jones said the debate will likely be a deciding factor for the “narrow” margin of voters still undecided between the presumptive nominees for the two major parties.
The political advisor noted that Biden does not have preferred “momentum” going into the debate, but he predicted a “strong” performance on policy-based discussions. However, if the president flubbed or botched his debate performance, he added, then it would be “game over.”
“If Biden goes out there and messes up, it’s game over. If he walks out there and a week later he’s lower in the polls, it’s panic in the party,” Jones said. “But if he goes in there and he can handle himself against Donald Trump — a runaway train, a locomotive, a raging bull — then this guy deserves another shot to be president, because that is tough.”
Next week’s debate is set to air on CNN, and a followup debate is scheduled for the fall on ABC. CNN’s debate will take place in Atlanta and be moderated by Dana Bash and Jake Tapper. It will be 90 minutes and there will be no studio audience.
“This is the whole presidency in a bottle, in a week,” Jones said.
