Don’t call it a comeback… okay, call it a comeback. Former Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) is eyeing a return to Congress, and he wants his old seat back. And the man holding that seat? Rep. George Santos (R-NY).
In a statement posted to Twitter/X, Suozzi announced his intention to reclaim the third congressional district of New York:
The madness in Washington, DC, and the absurdity of George Santos remaining in the United States Congress is obvious to everyone.
You know me. I’ve never sat on the sidelines. From the cost-of-living to immigration, crime, climate change, combating terrorism in the Middle East and globally, and simply helping people, we need more common sense and compassion and less chaos and senseless fighting.
Serial liar Santos, a.k.a. Anthony Devolder, is currently under federal indictment on 13 charges of fraud and previously faced fraud charges in Brazil before striking a plea deal.
The third congressional district of New York covers parts of Queens and Long Island’s Nassau and Suffolk Counties. While a Republican currently occupies the seat, the moderate Suozzi was a mainstay in local Long Island and state-level New York politics before running for Congress in 2016. He was re-elected in 2018, then left for an unsuccessful gubernatorial run. It’s a very “purple” district, and even though Santos won the seat in 2022 (before all of his lies were exposed), it was a district that voted for President Joe Biden in 2020. And, even more notably, it’s a district where Suozzi beat Santos by 12.4 points the same year.
It’s a very vulnerable seat for the GOP, especially given the extreme dissatisfaction of Santos’ constituents.
