‘He Is Very Nice’ Trump Praises David Pecker on Fox News Amid Testimony About ‘Catch and Kill’ Schemes
Donald Trump praised former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker as a “nice guy” on Thursday ahead of Pecker continuing his testimony in the former president’s hush money trial about “catch and kill” schemes to help his campaign.
Trump is facing more than 30 felony counts for falsifying business records. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg alleges the former president deliberately covered up a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to hide an affair. Trump has denied all wrongdoing.
On Thursday morning, Trump spoke to a group of construction workers in New York ahead of Pecker continuing his testimony, the Supreme Court weighing his presidential immunity argument, and Judge Juan Merchan’s ruling on whether the former president violated a gag order in place.
Trump had only positive things to say about Pecker despite many viewing the publisher’s claims on the stand as damaging for the former president.
“He’s been very nice. David’s been very nice. He’s a nice guy,” Trump told reporters.
He also echoed his call for the Supreme Court to affirm his “presidential immunity” amid his legal woes.
“If you don’t have immunity, you just have a ceremonial president,” he claimed.
On the stand this week, Pecker testified about his decades-long relationship to Trump and a “catch and kill” scheme where he would quash potentially negative stories about Trump, as well as push negative, conspiratorial stories about his political enemies. Pecker described meeting Trump and ex-attorney Michael Cohen in 2015 and asking how he could use his position to help the campaign.
New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman previously told CNN that Trump looked “unhappy” and “tense” as Pecker testified on the details of their relationship.
