‘He Just Got His Butt Kicked’: Chris Hayes Reacts to Brutal Election Result for Kentucky Republican
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes did not even wait for his own network to call the Kentucky governor’s race before declaring the Republican challenger got rinsed.
Democratic Governor Andy Beshear was projected to win reelection by NewsNation and Dave Wasserman of the Cook Political Report on Tuesday night, fending off a challenge from former Acting Attorney General Daniel Cameron. The major cable networks, however, were more circumspect – except Hayes.
The host began by noting that Beshear vetoed a bill passed by the state legislature banning gender-affirming care for children. It was a move Republican lawmakers in Kentucky hoped would help doom the governor’s reelection.
“He said, as a Christian and as a parent, I think this interferes with parental rights,” Hayes explained, paraphrasing the Beshear. “And they tried to utterly knock his head off on this. And we have now seen this over and over again. We saw it in races in Michigan in the midterms. We’ve seen it in the specials. They think, Republicans keep thinking this is their key issue, and we’ve got another tally on the board that shows it is not doing what they think it is.”
Hayes went on to say that unlike former Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, Cameron is a favorite of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and that despite the establishment support, he still lost.
“The last guy, Matt Bevin, was not a Mitch McConnell guy. In fact, he hated Mitch McConnell,” Hayes said. “This guy, Daniel Cameron, is Mitch McConnell’s dude. He is knighted by Mitch McConnell. And he just got his butt kicked.”
MSNBC called the race for Beshear about 30 minutes after Hayes buried Cameron’s candidacy.
CORRECTION: This article has been corrected to reflect that Daniel Cameron is the former acting attorney general of Kentucky, not the current attorney general.
