Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) called on members of Congress to condemn Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) on Tuesday after she accused him of using a “racist” trope towards Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO).

After Nehls remarked that Bush “wouldn’t be getting threats” if she wasn’t “so loud all the time,” Omar condemned Nehls on social media and demanded that he apologize.

“The loud black woman trope is racist and tired,” wrote Omar. “The Congressman should apologize and all members of Congress should condemn him.”

She concluded, “No one in our government deserves to be threatened regardless how loud they advocate for their positions and blaming the victim of harassment and threats can’t be condoned.”

Bush herself also slapped back Nehls, tweeting, “@RepTroyNehls just called my husband, a Black man and army veteran, a thug. And I’m the loud Black woman who needs to be silent in order to be safe from violence, or else?”

She protested, “This is the kind of rhetoric that endangers Black lives. He must apologize.”

Nehls made the remarks after it was revealed that Bush was being investigated by the Department of Justice to determine whether she misspent public funds on personal security.

In 2022, Bush reportedly spent $572,000 on security, of which $60,000 was given to her husband, a security guard.

Reacting to the news, Nehls said, “She doesn’t even support the police… But the idea to pay her thug money to try to help protect her this and that, for what?”

He suggested, “Maybe if she wouldn’t be so loud all the time, maybe she wouldn’t be getting threats.”
