Ilhan Omar Dismisses TikTok Concerns on CNN, Says It’s Exposing the ‘Slaughter’ in Gaza to Users

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) does not support a TikTok ban and told CNN she has no concerns after receiving an intel briefing this week.

CNN’s Abby Phillip noted in a Tuesday evening interview with Omar that she currently has the same position on TikTok as Donald Trump, who has not supported calls for a ban despite weighing a ban while he was president.

Omar argued she holds the same opinion as a majority of Americans. She said an intel briefing on concerns about the China-owned app and its algorithms being used to ramp up division left her unconvinced.

“None of the information that was provided to us really was persuasive,” she said.

According to Omar, some critics of the controversial app are finding “discomfort” in images out of Gaza. Tens of thousands of civilians have died amid the Israel-Hamas war, and Omar is among the Democrats who has vocally called for a ceasefire.

The congresswoman argued part of the importance of TikTok is these images being streamed directly from the people there, rather than Americans relying on “legacy media” for the information about the war.

“What I do think that people are finding discomfort is the fact that for the first time in our nation‘s history, Americans have access to real images of the horrors that are experienced by Palestinians daily and the onslaught that is taking place,” she said. “This horrific assault on Gaza really is being streamed to every single person here in this country, so we no longer have to rely on legacy media to get that information. Every single person has the information directly from the mouth of the people who are being slaughtered.”

President Joe Biden said last week he will sign a ban of TikTok if it manages to make it through the House and Senate. This came only weeks after the president joined the app himself.
