‘Incredibly Destructive and Dangerous’: AOC Wrecks DeSantis For Claiming Gazans ‘Are All Anti-Semitic’
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to task for claiming all Gaza residents are anti-Semites.
The Republican presidential candidate was in Iowa on Saturday and said the United States should not accept refugees from Gaza as Israel’s war with Hamas in the territory rages on. The conflict began earlier this month when Hamas, which controls Gaza, carried out terrorist attacks that killed more than 1,300 Israelis.
Ocasio-Cortez appeared in studio on Monday’s CNN NewsNight, where host Abby Phillip aired the clip of DeSantis.
“I don’t know what Biden’s gonna do, but we cannot accept people from Gaza into this country as refugees,” he said. “I am not gonna do that. If you look at how they behave, not all of them are Hamas, but they are all anti-Semitic. None of them believe in Israel’s right to exist.”
As the clip played, a split screen showed Ocasio-Cortez shaking her head in disapproval.
“There’s a lot in there,” Phillip told Ocasio-Cortez. “Is he touching on something that is perhaps real here? Should Arab countries be taking on the lion’s share of the burden to absorb what could be over one million if not more refugees from Gaza?”
In her response, she referenced the recent murder of a six-year-old Muslim boy in Illinois who was allegedly killed by a man police say targeted the boy and his mother:
I think there’s something to be said about the region’s partners being able to support and step up Palestinians. However, that does not abdicate the United States from our historic role that we’ve played in the world of accepting refugees and allowing people to restart their lives here.
And I also want to address something very specific about what Governor DeSantis said when he said quote, unquote, all Gazans are anti-Semitic – how incredibly destructive and dangerous that rhetoric is. We just had a six-year-old boy stabbed 26 times this morning because of rhetoric like that and it is dangerous. It is unacceptable. It is reckless. And no leader in the United States of America should be amplifying a message like that.
