Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called for Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) to resign immediately or face being expelled from the House.
Gallagher, who leads the GOP’s efforts to combat China, announced on Friday that he would resign his seat on April 19th – a surprise that rattled DC even as he had already said he wouldn’t seek reelection.
The former Marine and once rising star in the GOP was the latest in a string of top House Republicans to head for the exits, shrinking the already narrow GOP House majority to 217-213. The four-vote difference between the GOP and Democrats means the GOP cannot lose more than one Republican vote to pass measures along party lines.
Greene took to X (formerly Twitter) over the weekend and demanded that Gallagher leave the House even earlier, in an effort to try and protect the GOP’s majority.
“Yes he should be expelled if he refuses to leave immediately in order to allow his district to hold a special election to elect a representative so that their district can have a voice for the remainder of the 118th Congress!” Greene raged, adding:
Leaving after the deadline is intentional betrayal!
Greene also joined hard right conspiracy theorist Steve Bannon on his podcast and called Gallagher’s decision to leave Congress selfish. “Mike Gallagher’s extremely selfish decision to leave Congress early and push us towards a Hakeem Jeffries speakership should not be allowed to happen,” she wrote, sharing a clip of her appearance.
“Mike Gallagher should be expelled so the people of Wisconsin’s 8th District can have a special election to replace him,” she added.
The Cook Political Report lists Gallagher’s district as a safe Republican seat that leans ten points to the GOP. Gallagher was a top recruit for the GOP to run for the U.S. Senate in Wisconsin this cycle, a race he declined to join citing his preference to continue to fight China in the House.
Gallagher found himself at odds with former President Donald Trump in recent weeks as he championed the effort to force China to divest from TikTok. Trump has recently flip-flopped on TikTok – calling the company he once warned was a major national security threat less bad than U.S.-owned Meta.
Gallagher also crossed his party’s leadership when he joined with ex-Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) to vote against impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Buck resigned from Congress last week.
