Vice President JD Vance on Monday used a meme to hint at the possibility of deporting a popular menswear writer who may have immigrated to the U.S. illegally.
Early Sunday morning, Derek Guy — known by his Twitter/X handle @dieworkwear — received a wave of backlash from the left for labeling “violent protests” as “counterproductive.” That tweet was posted in response to the protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles. While Guy hasn’t explicitly stated his political leanings, he’s widely viewed as left-leaning due to his frequent insults of conservative figures and their clothing.
Hours later, Guy made a lengthy post detailing his own experience with immigration. According to the writer, his family “escaped Vietnam after the Tet Offensive and went through an arduous journey that eventually landed them in the Canada.” When his father went down to the U.S. for work, he ended up staying longer than he was supposed to. Guy and his mother followed his father shortly after, and Guy has been an undocumented immigrant since he was young.
In response to Guy admitting to entering the country illegally when he was younger, X user @growing_daniel wrote, “JD Vance I know you’re reading this and you have the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever.”
Vance responded to the tweet with a GIF from the 2003 comedy Anger Management. The GIF consists of actor Jack Nicholson nodding with a mischievous grin.
