Jen Psaki Makes Clear Biden Needed Border Executive Order to Cover Major ‘Political Vulnerability’

Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said it’s clear President Joe Biden’s executive order on the southern border was a political move he needed to make ahead of the election to cover a major “vulnerability.”

Psaki, now an MSNBC host, joined Morning Joe on Wednesday to discuss news of Biden’s plan, which includes limited asylum requests until numbers at the border become more manageable. While the new order is active, migrants who cross the border illegally will be denied asylum. The order remains in effect as long as daily border crossings exceed 2,500 over a seven-day average.

Psaki called the border a major “political vulnerability” for her former boss going into November.

“This is one of the biggest vulnerabilities and regardless of who’s mad about the details of what’s in here and what isn’t in here, it’s a political vulnerability for the president and his campaign,” she said.

Psaki argued some kind of action was going to need to be taken to push back against former President Donald Trump and Republicans using the crisis at the border as a campaign point.

“They knew they would have to do something like an executive order before the election politically as well, and that’s what we’re seeing play out,” she said.

Trump quickly came out against Biden’s border action, claiming the president has “totally surrendered” the border and that the order would somehow “make the invasion worse.”
