Jen Psaki Sounds Alarm on ‘Huge, Huge Problem’ Third Party Candidates Pose to Biden — Trashes ‘Conspiracy Theorist’ RFK Jr.
Jen Psaki declared third party candidates to be “one of the biggest threats” to President Joe Biden getting reelected.
The former White House press secretary joined Morning Joe on Thursday and during a discussion on third party efforts in the upcoming presidential election, Psaki sounded the alarm, especially on independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. whom she said is still “beloved” in critical states like Georgia and Michigan.
Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski asked Psaki what could be motivating candidates like Kennedy Jr. when critics are accusing him of potentially benefitting Donald Trump in November.
“I don’t want to be in RFK Jr.’s brain where he didn’t believe in science and all sorts of other things … this is the biggest challenge,” Psaki said.
The MSNBC host said Trump has “broad appeal in his base,” but could struggle with independents, some of whom could choose third party candidates instead of Biden.
“He has problems among independents and with an expanded electorate. But these third-party candidates are a huge, huge, huge problem, and there’s a number of them. If you look at RFK, it’s the name recognition issue,” she said.
That “name,” she continued, carries more weight in states like Georgia and Kennedy Jr. has managed double digits in states like Michigan.
Psaki claimed those who vote for Kennedy Jr. likely wouldn’t know “a lot about the fact that he is an anti-vaxxer who is a conspiracy theorist.”
There is an aggressive effort that the campaign has been working with the Democratic National Committee onto run on this, but it needs to be broad. People need to be shouting it from the rooftops because this one of the biggest threats to Joe Biden being reelected.”
Kennedy Jr. is running as an independent candidate after previously posing a long-shot challenge to Biden for the Democratic nomination. He’s repeatedly denied being anti-vaccine against critics. In a recent fiery exchange with CNN’s Kasie Hunt, Kennedy Jr. reacted to footage of himself saying no vaccine is completely “safe and effective.”
The DNC filed a federal election complaint accusing Kennedy Jr.’s campaign and the American Values PAC of illegal coordination, which both denied, in his effort to make state ballots. They’ve also accused the Super PAC of violating campaign finance laws.
