McConnell Drops Scathing Statement On Voting Against RFK Jr: ‘Trafficking In Dangerous Conspiracy Theories’
Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) issued a scathing statement against Robert F Kennedy Jr. on Thursday as he was the only Republican senator to vote against Kennedy’s successful confirmation for health and human services secretary.
“I’m a survivor of childhood polio. In my lifetime, I’ve watched vaccines save millions of lives from devastating diseases across America and around the world. I will not condone the re-litigation of proven cures, and neither will millions of Americans who credit their survival and quality of life to scientific miracles,” McConnell wrote in his statement, adding:
Individuals, parents, and families have a right to push for a healthier nation and demand the best possible scientific guidance on preventing and treating illness. But a record of trafficking in dangerous conspiracy theories and eroding trust in public health institutions does not entitle Mr. Kennedy to lead these important efforts.
McConnell also voted against Pete Hegseth and Tulsi Gabbard becoming defense secretary and director of national intelligence, respectively. The White House took aim at McConnell on Wednesday following his sole vote against Gabbard, saying they were “greatly disappointed.” McConnell also noted in his statement how Kennedy had opposed and questioned the Covid-19 vaccines, which were created quickly at the direction of the first Trump administration.
“This Administration – led by the same President who delivered a medical miracle with Project Warp Speed – deserves a leader who is willing to acknowledge without qualification the efficacy of life-saving vaccines and who can demonstrate an understanding of basic elements of the U.S. healthcare system. Mr. Kennedy failed to prove he is the best possible person to lead America’s largest health agency. As he takes office, I sincerely hope Mr. Kennedy will choose not to sow further doubt and division but to restore trust in our public health institutions,” McConnell concluded.
Kennedy, a former heroin addict, has long been seen as one of Trump’s most controversial cabinet nominees over his long record of questioning vaccine efficacy and spreading conspiracy theories claiming that the U.S. was creating bioweapons, that chemicals in drinking water turn children trans, and that Russia weaponized wifi radiation — the name a few examples.
McConnell holds the record as the longest-serving party leader in the history of the U.S. Senate, having only recently stepped down as GOP leader. McConnell played a pivotal role in Trump escaping conviction in his second impeachment trial, but has since become a primary target of Trump’s vitriol on a variety of issues. Trump has also launched personal attacks against McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, who served in Trump’s first cabinet.
