Morning Joe Hosts Praise Biden’s Union Speech, But Ignore Viral Moment He Went Ron Burgundy Reading Teleprompter
Morning Joe’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski offered praise for President Joe Biden’s speech to union workers this week, but ignored the moment he channeled Anchorman character Ron Burgundy and read a little too much from his teleprompter.
On Thursday, Morning Joe aired clips from Biden’s talk to a union legislative conference after he earned the endorsement of the North America’s Building Trades Unions. In the two segments touching on the speech, Biden took shots at his likely November opponent, Donald Trump.
In one clip aired, Biden accused Trump of recommending people inject bleach into their veins to combat Covid-19, referring to Trump infamously inquiring about disinfectant being used to combat Covid, though he clarified later during the same talk that he was not promoting an injection method.
“He missed it, it all went to his hair. I shouldn’t have said that!” Biden said to laughter.
“Oh, yes, he should have! That was pretty good!” Brzezinski said.
More clips were shown later on, these including Biden painting Trump as the opposite of the working class, accusing the former president of inheriting his wealth and believing firing people is funny, referencing Trump’s famous “you’re fired” line from his long-running Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice shows.
Biden declared that he was taught “being told you’re fired wasn’t entertainment, it was devastating. It was a nightmare.”
“Wow,” Scarborough said.
“Quite a speech there,” Brzezinski.
The rest of Morning Joe’s coverage almost entirely focused on Trump’s legal battles, of which there was plenty to focus on. The former president’s immunity claim was debated in the Supreme Court, day seven of his hush money trial in Manhattan kicked off, and he’s still waiting on Judge Juan Merchan to rule whether he violated a gag order.
Morning Joe’s coverage of Biden’s speech missed one viral moment he faced plenty of mockery from critics over. In the final moments of his talk, Biden read “pause” from his teleprompter after declaring, “four more years.” The last word wasn’t an homage to hip hop, but rather direction from the script to take a pause after saying, “four more years.”
The gaffe didn’t matter all that much to the audience as the awkward silence was cut through almost immediately with a “four more years” chant from the friendly crowd, many of whom were sporting pro-Biden t-shirts and signage.
