Nikki Haley, After Coming Third in Iowa, Boasts GOP Primary Now ‘a Two-Person Race’
Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley declared on Monday that the GOP primary was now “a two person race,” despite coming third in the Iowa caucus behind Ron DeSantis.
During a speech to supporters after the majority of votes were counted, Haley noted, “At one point in this campaign, there were fourteen of us running. I was at 2% in the polls.”
She then boasted, “But tonight Iowa did what Iowa always does so well. The pundits will analyze the results from every angle, we get that, but when you look at how we’re doing in New Hampshire, in South Carolina, and beyond, I can safely say tonight Iowa made this Republican primary a two-person race.”
As of reporting, with 96% of the votes counted, Haley came in third place with 19.1% – a whole two percent behind DeSantis, who came in second place with 21.2%, and former President Donald Trump, the overwhelming winner with 51%.
While Haley failed to overtake DeSantis in Iowa, polls in New Hampshire and South Carolina show Haley significantly ahead of the Florida governor.
According to RealClearPolitics’ New Hampshire poll average, Trump is the clear frontrunner at 43.5%, followed by Haley at 29.3%, Chris Christie – who recently suspended his campaign – at 11.3%, and DeSantis at just 6.5%.
RealClearPolitics’ poll average for South Carolina shows Haley in second place at 21.8%, more than 10% ahead of DeSantis at 11%.
