‘None of Us Out Here Care’: Fed-Up Jake Tapper Tells GOP Congressman That Republicans Should ‘Get Over It’ and Choose a Speaker

Jake Tapper told Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR) that Americans are simply uninterested in Republican infighting in the House, telling him GOP lawmakers need to “get over it.”

On Friday, the House rejected the third and final try by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) to become the leader of the House. He was defeated in a vote of the House, which sealed his speaker-less fate.

Tapper, who was already so over this story on Tuesday, suggested to Womack on The Lead that Republicans use ranked choice voting as a way to finally choose a speaker.

“This country needs a speaker,” the CNN host said. “This isn’t about, you know, prom king. Like, we need a functioning legislative branch.”

“Yeah, well, that’s the obvious,” Womack replied. “And we’d like to be able to deliver on that. But, we seem to have a hard time understanding that in a narrow majority, where you can only lose four votes – and it may be less than that if your members aren’t here. So, you’re at 217. We got [433] members in the entire House and you gotta get 217. And there is a litmus test. Democrats are not gonna vote for a Republican nominee. That’s the way this process works But you know, if that’s gonna be the case, then you have to get 217 in your own conference and as fractured as it is. And let me tell you, there’s some deep wounds right now. There are some hurt feelings. There are some angry people–”

Tapper interrupted him.

“I know, but you know what? None of us out here care,” he said as his voice oozed with palpable disgust. “It’s just like, get over it.”

The host proceeded to liken the mess to high school drama.

“That’s kind of offensive to high school people,” Womack replied. “Because it is really junior high stuff.”

Republican leadership sent members home for the weekend and will start all over on Monday.
