‘Only 50?’ Trump Left Wanting More by Marco Rubio’s Praise for Gaza Peace Deal
President Donald Trump on Monday jokingly suggested that Secretary of State Marco Rubio shorted him on praise for the president’s Gaza peace deal.
That morning, Hamas released the remaining living hostages back to Israel. Following Israel and Hamas’ agreement to a deal the week before, the return of the hostages was a significant step toward permanently ending the brutal, bloody war in the Gaza Strip.
As he hinted at days earlier, Trump traveled to Egypt in hopes of firmly securing a peace deal. During a press conference with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Trump boasted about the significance of the deal before turning it over to his Rubio for additional remarks.
Rubio added:
Egypt’s been a phenomenal participant. I think both Steve [Witkoff] and Jared [Kushner] will tell you the critical role they played, and they can tell you themselves. They hosted the talks here, and they’re gonna play a very important role now in the follow-up, the implementation of this, which is really — it’s not simply about restoring Gaza. It is about transforming the region.
So we have an incredible partner, a long alliance, very capable partner here, and a tremendous collection of leaders. This is clearly, in my mind — I think in the mind of everyone in this room — probably one of the most important days for world peace in 50 years, and that’s not an exaggeration.
Trump quickly responded, “Only 50?”
Rubio then doubled that initial number and declared it was the most significant day for world peace in “maybe 100” years.
