Pete Buttigieg Responds to New House Speaker Calling His Marriage a ‘Dark Harbinger of Chaos’ On The Late Show

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg joined Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show this week and was asked to weigh in on new House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) past anti-LGBTQ statements.

“When we last talked, Mike Johnson was not speaker of the House. Now Mike Johnson is speaker of the House. His record on LGBTQ issues is what’s the word — awful. So how do you work with a guy who argued that same-sex relations are, quote, ‘the dark harbinger of chaos and sexual anarchy that could doom even the strongest republic’?” Colbert asked Buttigieg, who is raising two young children with his husband.

“Look. I’ll work with anybody who can help us get good transportation available to the American people. But, I don’t know. Maybe we’ll just have them over,” Buttigieg replied, adding:

Because our little house isn’t that far from the Capitol. And if he could see what it’s like when I come home from work and Chasten’s bringing the kids home from daycare, or vice versa, and one of us is getting the mac and cheese ready, and the other one’s microwaving those little freezer meatballs that are a great cheat code.

“If you got toddlers and you got to feed them quickly and they won’t take their shoes off and one of them needs a diaper change. Everything about that is chaos, but nothing about that is dark,” he continued as the audience applauded.

“That’s the love of God in that house,” Buttigieg concluded.

Johnson landed in hot water after CNN’s K-File found some old op-eds he wrote for his local newspaper in Louisiana.

In a 2004 column, highlighted by CNN, Johnson warned same-sex marriage will end democracy:

If you were shocked by the moral lapses at the Super Bowl you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Experts project that homosexual marriage is the dark harbinger of chaos and sexual anarchy that could doom even the strongest republic.

Johnson’s writings also argued that “polygamists, polyamorists, pedophiles, and others” would benefit if same-sex marriage were made legal in the United States.
