Ted Cruz Repeatedly REFUSES to Comment on Texas Denying Woman a Medical Abortion: ‘Call Our Press Office’
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) had little to say when he was asked about the saga of Kate Cox, the Texas woman who was denied a medical abortion in his state.
Last week, a state judge ruled that doctors who perform an abortion on the 31-year-old would be exempt from prosecution under Texas’ anti-abortion law. According to her lawsuit, Cox’s fetus has trisomy 18, which is a chromosomal condition that is often accompanied by physical abnormalities. The lawsuit said that when born, the baby would not be able to survive more than a few days.
Then in an extraordinary step, Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton threatened to prosecute any doctors who performed an abortion on Cox despite the judge’s order. A subsequent ruling by the Texas Supreme Court sided with Paxton. Cox, meanwhile, fled the state to obtain an abortion legally.
On Tuesday, both U.S. senators from Texas were asked to comment.
“Do you support with the Texas attorney general did in blocking Kate Cox from getting an abortion after she found out her fetus was not viable?” Kate Santaliz of NBC News asked Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX).
“That’s strictly a matter of state law, not federal law,” he replied.
“Are you worried about women in your state whose health may be at risk by Texas law?” she followed up.
“Well, I’m a federal official, not a state official, so I’m not gonna comment on what state officials are doing,” Cornyn said.
Then it was Cruz’s turn:
SANTALIZ: Senator, I wanted to get your thoughts on what the Texas attorney general’s doing in the case against Kate Cox and blocking her receiving an abortion? Do you have any comment on that?
CRUZ: Just call our press office…
SANTALIZ: Do you agree with Attorney General Paxton’s actions and what he did?
CRUZ: Just call our press office.
SANTALIZ: I have. I actually haven’t received an answer. So, is there anything that you’d like to say right now on this?
CRUZ: Call our press office.
Cruz hosts a podcast three times a week where he opines about a galaxy of topics.
Both Cruz and Cornyn have co-sponsored a 20-week federal abortion ban.
