Republican Congressman Whose District Is on Fire Tells Trump He Wants Conditions on Disaster Relief
President Donald Trump visited Southern California on Friday to tour the damage done by the ongoing wildfires in the state, where he held a press conference with local officials. Earlier in the day, Trump reiterated that he wants federal disaster relief to be conditional, but this time he made two specific demands.
He said he wants “to see two things in Los Angeles: voter I.D. so that the people can vote. And I want to see the water be released and come down into Los Angeles and throughout this state.”
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), who represents much of the San Diego suburbs and exurbs, spoke during the presser and said that in the House, Republicans will insist any aid Congress appropriates will be conditional.
“Mr. President, we’re gonna be together next week,” Issa began. “We are going to be putting conditions on the money that do two things: require it be done timely and affordable; and then secondly, that we protect those who will come afterwards. As we speak, there are 6,000 acres burning in my district on the Mexican border. There will be more fires until we include – in any disaster relief – items which will prevent or at least mitigate it from happening again. So, you’re gonna see us proposing both of those.”
“Like water,” Trump interrupted. “Little things like water.”
The president then turned to Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA), with whom he clashed earlier in the press conference.
“Brad, we’re the party of common sense,” Trump said. “You’re not, in all fairness.”
Trump has fixated on the water supply from the San Joaquin River Delta some 400 miles north of Los Angeles. He has dubiously insisted that the fires have been exacerbated because state officials have refused to redirect the water southward – even though Los Angeles gets much of its water from Owens Valley, east of the Sierra Nevadas.
