Author and actress Julianne Moore reacted with shock after President Donald Trump’s administration banned her children’s book Freckleface Strawberry from schools run by the Defense Department.
The administration also embargoed Kathleen Krull’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg picture book No Truth Without Ruth and Ellis Nutt’s Becoming Nicole. According to The Guardian, the Defense Department sent a memo to parents with children in their schools saying the books were banned as part of a “compliance” review of books “potentially related to gender ideology or discriminatory equity ideology topics.”
“It is a great shock for me to learn that my first book, ‘Freckleface Strawberry,’ has been banned by the Trump Administration from schools run by the Department of Defense,” Moore wrote in a Sunday morning post on Instagram.
She added, “‘Freckleface Strawberry’ is a semi-autobiographical story about a seven year old girl who dislikes her freckles but eventually learns to live with them when she realizes that she is different ‘just like everybody else.’ It is a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle, but are united by our humanity and our community.”

The memo obtained by The Guardian said that the titles have been relocated “to the professional collection for evaluation with access limited to professional staff.”
“I can’t help but wonder what is so controversial about this picture book that caused it to be banned by the US Government,” Moore wrote. “I am truly saddened and never thought I would see this in a country where freedom of speech and expression is a constitutional right.
Celebrities, including Bella Thorne and Michelle Pfeiffer, reacted to the news with disappointment and shock while showing their support for Moore by commenting on her post.
“Wow this is crazy,” wrote Thorne in Moore’s post, while Pfeiffer asked where she could purchase the book out of support for the author.
