Liz Cheney Says DOJ Should Decide Whether Trump Should Be Prosecuted For Capitol Attack

Rep. Liz Cheney is the third-ranking member of the House of Representatives and when asked if former President Donald Trump should be prosecuted for his role in the January 6th attack on the Capitol Building led by his supporters, she demurred and said that should be left up to the Department of Justice.

This according to reporting by Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman who is in Orlando, Florida covering a retreat of House Republicans ostensibly designed for the GOP caucus to unify after a recent election that saw the White House and Senate gain Democratic control, though the House Republicans saw sizeable gains in their representation on that legislative side of the Capitol.

Sherman tweeted the newsworthy comments from Rep. Cheney, who for many is the perfect embodiment of the very “Establishment Republicans” who have. at times, struggled with Trump’s approach to governance and leadership of the Grand Old Party. Sherman tweeted :

Cheney was among a handful of House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the deadly attacks of January 6th, riots which were proceeded by a fiery speech giving by Trump in which he called out Cheney in particular. At the CPAC convention earlier in the year, Trump listed every House Republican who voted for his impeachment and said “get rid of them all!”

The events of January 6th led to a second impeachment trial for former President Trump, who was not found guilty but was still called out by many Republican leaders such as Senator Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. Trump still holds tremendous power over the Republican party, so even though GOP leaders effectively called him out for ostensibly leading an insurrection against the country, he is still very much calling political shots, which many see make Congressional Republican leadership look weak and ineffective.
