Former Trump administration trade adviser Peter Navarro laid into Tony Hinchliffe’s joke about Puerto Rico on social media Monday, blasting the roast comedian as an “asshole” and telling his followers the joke was “not funny.”
Hinchliffe’s jab at Puerto Rico at Sunday’s rally for former President Donald Trump at New York’s Madison Square Garden sparked immediate backlash.
The comedian called the GOP the “party with the good sense of humor” before he said, “I don’t know if you guys know this, but there is literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico?”
Hinchliffe refused to offer an apology after the rally and attacked Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz after they took offense to it on a Sunday Twitch stream.
Conservatives have been somewhat divided on the jab at Puerto Rico. Some have portrayed it as a benign joke. Others have pointed out it was cruel. There is still lingering anger in the US territory over the Trump administration’s response to 2017’s Hurricane Maria.
The storm decimated much of the island, which was not lost on Navarro.
On his X (formerly Twitter) account Monday, Navarro – who is fresh out of prison for defying a congressional subpoena – attacked Hinchliffe in a series of tweets. The 75-year-old said in no uncertain terms that the slight at Puerto Rico was “stupid.”
Trump’s campaign attempted to distance itself from Hinchliffe on Monday.
The former president’s senior campaign adviser, Danielle Alvarez, told The Washington Post, “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,”
