President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office have been the worst start to any elected president’s term since the 1970s, which were rife with geopolitical chaos and domestic upheaval.

CNBC’s Sarah Min reported Monday on the findings from CFRA research, an independent investment research firm. CFRA tracked the performance of the S&P 500 for president’s dating back to Harry S Truman. “The S&P 500′s 7.9% drop from when Trump was sworn into office on Jan. 20 through the April 25 close, is the second worst first 100-day performance going back to the beginning of President Richard Nixon’s second term,” reported Min on the data.

Nixon saw a -9.9% fall in the S&P at the beginning of his second term in 1973, “after a series of economic measures he took to combat inflation resulted in the 1973 to 1975 recession,” noted the report. President George W. Bush’s -6.9% drop in 2001 is the third worst performance by the S&P in a modern president’s first 100 days.

At its lowest point since Trump took office, the S&P 500 dropped a full 10% – following Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff announcement in April. The market, however, recovered after Trump announced a 90-day pause on his sweeping global tariffs going into effect, in order to allow individual countries time to make new trade agreements to lower tariffs across the board.

Min did note, though, that Trump still has some time to make up ground. “The S&P 500, which reached a closing high of 6,144.15 on Feb. 19, closed Friday at 5,525.21. It has erased all post-election gains from November. To be sure, Trump has two more trading days to cut his losses. His first 100 days technically end on Tuesday.” The S&P 500, however, was trading down as of Monday afternoon, having just entered the red with only an hour left in trading.
