NEW POLL: More Americans Believe Trump Should Get Time in Prison Than Not

According to a new Yahoo/YouGov poll from last Friday, more Americans believe that former President Donald Trump should be sentenced to time behind bars than not.
Trump was found guilty of 34 separate counts of conspiring to mislead the FEC through fraudulent bank records by a Lower Manhattan court, despite his repeated insistence that he is a victim of a weaponized DOJ and “witch hunt.”
Of course, many might be left wondering how a convicted felon who paid hush money payments to a porn star to keep quiet about an extramarital affair is still a presumptive party’s candidate; the political implications of his conviction loom large in the general election in November.
The polling shows a slight uptick in approval for Biden over Trump — whom they poll at 46 and 44 percent, respectively. But it’s the majority that are in favor of Trump getting prison time that stands out. From Yahoo:
Yet at the very least, Biden’s improvement on a two-way ballot suggests that being found guilty of 34 felony counts is not good news for Trump.
The next beat in the former president’s legal saga is his sentencing, which is currently scheduled for July 11. Slightly more Americans think Trump should get a prison sentence (43%) than think he should not (40%).
After that, Trump faces three additional criminal trials, all of which have been delayed indefinitely. Yet a full 64% of Americans now say it is important “that voters get a verdict in Trump’s trials before the 2024 general election” — versus just 25% who say it is not important.
The United States has never before tried a former president, let alone convicted him. As I wrote in a column last summer, perhaps it’s time that the nation comes to terms with the fact that it is now a country which nominates candidates under numerous indictments and, possibly, even imprisons them if found guilty.
