Donald Trump will be fined $10,000 per day until he turns over documents to the New York attorney general, who is conducting an investigation into his business practices.
On Monday, Judge Arthur Engoron held Trump in contempt of court for failing to turn over the documents to New York Attorney General Letitia James, and said he would be charged a fine of $10,000 per day until he complied with the subpoena.
“I know you take your business seriously, and I take mine seriously,” said Engoron, of State Supreme Court in Manhattan, before issuing the bench ruling. “I hereby hold you in civil contempt.”
Trump was not in the courtroom, according to Reuters.
Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba told ABC News the former president would appeal the ruling, and called the hefty daily fine “crazy.”
She was also overheard by ABC News in the hallway of the court on the phone with Trump. “We’ll fix it, sir,” she said.
James is investigating whether the Trump Organization inflated the value of its real estate properties on annual financial statements in an effort to obtain loans and tax deductions.
