Afghan Murder Suspect Defrauded Elderly Couple Out Of More Than $1 Million Dollars

The soldier accused of going on a murderous rampage in Afghanistan reportedly preyed upon senior citizens before joining the military. Alleged Afghan murderer Robert Bales defrauded an elderly couple out of more than a million dollars of their life savings, ABC News’ Brian Ross reports.

“My income is less than what’s going out. So, we’re trying to make ends meet,” claims Gary Liebschner.

“How much did you lose?” Ross asked Liebschner. “Did you lose everything?”

“Everything,” Liebschner acknowledged.

Liebschner took his case against Bales and his firm to Wall Street regulators in May 2000 and an independent arbitrator later found that Bales engaged in “fraud, unauthorized trading and unsuitable investments.” Bales joined the Army after 9/11 and could not be located despite an arbitrator ordering him and his associates to pay more than $1.4 million dollars. Ross asked if it was fair to call Bales a con man.

“I think you hit the nail on the head,” Liebschner replied.
