Carl Bernstein Bashes ‘Enablers’ Putting Trump Over Country: McCabe Departure is ‘Monday Night Slaughter’
The way Carl Bernstein sees it, it’s only a matter of time before people look back at Andrew McCabe‘s departure from the FBI and compare it to Richard Nixon‘s Saturday Night Massacre.
Bernstein joined CNN’s Don Lemon on Monday night, where he was asked whether the FBI deputy director taking leave indicates a breakdown of America’s institutions. The noted Watergate reporter not only answered in the affirmative, but he also blamed an “obstructive, irresponsible, partisan gang in the House of Representatives” for putting Trump’s benefit above national interests.
“I think we may look back on tonight as the Monday Night Slaughter of the administration of justice in the United States,” Bernstein said.
Bernstein was quite possibly referring to the congressional GOPers who voted to release a classified, partisan-charged memo that supposedly accuses the FBI and DOJ of abusing FISA power to investigate the Trump campaign. Indeed, Bernstein went on to allude to certain “enablers” in the government who are working with Trump to make sure investigations into Russian election interference never come anywhere near the president.
To this end, Bernstein warned that America is heading towards a Constitutional crisis as long as Congress keeps trying to protect the president.
“If the facts are exonerating him, then he should be exonerated, but he is trying to suppress the investigation of the President of the United States,” Bernstein said. “If you had had Speaker Ryan and Mitch McConnell as the leaders during Watergate, I doubt seriously that that investigation would have gone forward and we would have seen what we’re seeing now…”
