CBS Explains Colbert Decision: He’s ‘Head and Tails Above Everybody Else’
CBS set the internet ablaze today with the announcement that Stephen Colbert will be David Letterman‘s successor on The Late Show in 2015. CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler cleared up a few things about the transition and CBS’ late night plans in an interview with EW.com.
Tassler confirmed that The Late Show will remain in New York (despite an attempt by the mayor of Los Angeles to tempt CBS westward), Colbert will be dropping his “Stephen Colbert” character, and that Craig Ferguson will continue hosting The Late Late Show after Colbert.
Tassler profusely praised Colbert, saying, “He just is head and tails above everybody else and Dave is a very big seat to fill. We’re huge fans, he’s inspired and talented for all the obvious reasons.” She expressed confidence that Colbert’s brand of humor will “honor Dave’s legacy in terms of his ability and intellect.”
Tassler addressed calls for a woman or person of color to host the show (“there were a lot of names that came up”) and dismissed any potential issues that could arise from Colbert’s politics. Right now nothing about the content of the show is settled, but it will still be called The Late Show.
