Chris Matthews Says Trump’s ‘Purging’ Everybody From Russia Probe: ‘Slow Motion Saturday Night Massacre’
Following a day of news that included Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe stepping down from his post and the House Intelligence Committee voting to release the Nunes memo, Hardball’s Chris Matthews expressed his belief that we are now witnessing a purge when it comes to the Russia investigation.
“It looks to me like a purge,” Matthews said to Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX). “Today McCabe gets pushed out as deputy of the FBI and now the president’s on the warpath after — thanks to Chairman Nunes of your committee to dig up evidence enough to support getting rid of Rod Rosenstein, the deputy head of the Justice Department. Why is he purging everybody that’s involved with investigating him and the Russian probe?”
After Castro said that McCabe shouldn’t be replaced by “somebody who is just a presidential stooge” that will kill the probe but that there are already “plenty of people” doing Trump’s bidding, Matthews compared what’s going on now to the Nixon era.
“Congressman, you’re too young to have seen it,” the MSNBC host said. “But it looks like a slow motion Saturday night massacre. One by one, Comey, Mccabe and now Rosenstein in the target zone.”
Throughout the rest of the panel discussion, Matthews continued to describe what Trump was doing as a “purge” and claimed it was akin to Richard Nixon firing Archibald Cox during the Watergate investigation.
