CNN Guest Reports Young Men Keep Saying They Felt ‘Safer’ Under Trump, Are Worried About Getting Drafted Into War

Peter Hamby, the host of Snapchat’s Good Luck America, told CNN Thursday that young male voters have repeatedly expressed to him on college campuses that they would feel safer if former President Donald Trump were elected to a second term in two weeks.

Hamby is on a tour of campuses for the show and told Dana Bash that while many college-aged men would prefer Trump, they don’t necessarily dislike Vice President Kamala Harris.

Bash noted Trump’s campaign is making a hard push for young men who were not of voting age during his term in office.

Hamby said some of Trump’s messaging was resonating with some men but that “masculinity” was not a major factor to many of the students he had spoken. Most were more concerned about the economy and global peace, he said.

“Some of these folks that I’ve been talking to on this college tour we’ve been doing for Good Luck America, were only nine, 10, 11-years-old when Donald Trump was in office,” he said, noting they were still coming of age during the Covid pandemic.

“Young men in particular – and polls and focus groups bear this out – just have a lot of anxiety about the state of the world,” Hamby said. He added:

Donald Trump is using some of those cultural tactics to tap into that anxiety. But the issues here, Dana, are very removed from the conversations that are currently going on in Washington. John Kelly and fascism, about Joe Rogan. Men in particular on these campuses, they don’t really care that much from what I’ve been hearing about these cultural issues. They care about everyday concerns. Again, only about a third of Americans, Dana, have a college degree.

So this is a sub-sample of younger voters in general, but the young men that I have been talking to in particular, they don’t hate Kamala Harris. They actually like her in certain ways. And even young Republicans, I’ve talked to talk about her more warmly than I guarantee they would have about Hillary Clinton. They just say they think the world was better and safer under Donald Trump, the economy was healthier. One other thing that keeps he’s coming up, too, that you don’t hear a lot about in the national media, Dana is a lot of young men are worried about global conflict because they are of draft age.

Hamby said the issue of a military draft had come up time and again during his conversations with young men.
