CNN’s Jake Tapper: Jim Jordan’s Defeated House Speaker Bid Went ‘A Lot Worse Than I Expected’
CNN News Central reached the consensus that Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) defeated bid for House Speaker went “a lot worse” than they thought it would.
CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash heard from former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) on Tuesday as they watched the vote count and saw Jordan’s bid on track for its eventual failure. Kinzinger called it “embarrassing” for Jordan and hypothesized that the loss would dramatically set back the House Judiciary Committee chairman’s hopes of becoming speaker.
As Tapper asked Bash what will happen next, she told her colleagues, “I just got a message from a Jordan ally saying, ‘This is much worse than we expected.'”
“So despite the bravado, despite what Jim Jordan himself said to Manu [Raju] umpteen times,” Bash said, “he not only didn’t get there in the first round, but they expected to do better than losing 20 fellow Republicans, as they have done.”
Tapper strongly agreed, saying, “This is a lot worse than I expected he would do.”
“We knew going into here, into the vote, that he had six no votes,” Tapper said. “We did not know there were 20, and he certainly lost people that weren’t even on our list of people to watch.”
Raju topped this off by reporting that Jordan will likely pursue another vote, but “this is worse than they anticipated.”
