Democrat Dan Goldman Reacts to ‘Travesty’ of Trump Legal Cases Winding Up After Win: ‘We Will Not Take This Sitting Down’
Representative Daniel Goldman (D-NY) reacted to the DOJ winding down the criminal cases against President-elect Donald Trump by calling it a “travesty” for the justice system.
Earlier this week, special counsel Jack Smith filed a motion to clear deadlines within Trump’s criminal case in D.C., indicating the department was preparing to drop it’s charges against the president-elect following his Tuesday victory.
Goldman joined MSNBC anchor Al Sharpton for an interview on Sunday where he said it was “truly shameful” that Trump would be “avoiding accountability” for his criminal charges. The New York lawmaker also dismissed claims that the Biden DOJ was weaponized against Trump.
SHARPTON: Congressman Goldman, you’re a former federal prosecutor. You served as counsel to House Democrats during Trump’s first impeachment. NBC’s reporting that the Department of Justice is now trying to figure out how to wind down two federal cases against him. The January 6th and classified document cases before he takes office. At the same time, Trump is trying to get both his federal and state cases wiped out, especially his felony sentencing here in New York, which which he wants dismissed. And the Georgia election case against him, which is tied up on appeal. What are your thoughts with all of this?
GOLDMAN: Well, I think it is truly shameful that Donald Trump is appears at least right now, to be avoiding accountability for the crimes that a grand jury charged him of. I am sick and tired of hearing Republicans project that in any way, shape or form the Biden DOJ weaponized itself against Republicans. This is the same DOJ that charged and convicted the president’s son. Don’t tell me about weaponization of the DOJ when Donald Trump tried it over and over again is and has already announced that he will do it again. I can tell you that we will not we will not take this sitting down. This is a travesty for justice. It’s a travesty for our criminal justice system. And I understand the Department of Justice’s own policy that they cannot indict or prosecute a sitting president, which will make it, of course, very difficult to pursue these cases against Donald Trump on the federal level. But this is not the way our rule of law works to have one man above all else. And that is effectively what the Supreme Court and now two others have said about Donald Trump.
