Democrat on CNN Threatens To Bail on Party Over Leaders’ ‘Inability to Figure Out What To Do in the Face of Fascism’
Progressive writer Touré, a lifelong Democrat, told CNN’s Abby Phillip Friday night that he is considering leaving the party over its “inability” to combat the “fascism” of President Donald Trump and Republicans.
The Substack author and former MSNBC host said he had supported the party his entire life but that he was reevaluating his alliance.
On CNN NewsNight, the host and her panelists discussed Democratic backlash to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer voting to advance a GOP funding bill to avert a government shutdown.
Schumer took flak from his own ranks Thursday and Friday after getting behind a Trump-backed continuing resolution. Phillip advocated for Schumer, noting his rationale was that he did not want to see his party blamed for a government shutdown.
While addressing Touré, she said, “Wasn’t Schumer right at the end of the day that a shutdown would have been politically disastrous for Democrats? No. And practically disastrous?”
“For Democrats? Why for Democrats?” Touré fired back. “We don’t run the country. The Republicans run the country. They’re shutting it down.” He continued:
The grassroots is furious, right? Most of the caucus is furious. I never before – my parents were Democrats, I’ve been a Democrat my entire life –ever before did I say I should leave this party because if democracy is at risk and you had no idea what to do and you have no plan and even now at this moment you know nothing of what to do and you’re capitulating to this? This is disgusting.
Phillip asked him, “Are you thinking about leaving the Democratic Party?”
“Yes, yes, me personally, yes,” Touré responded. “I’m not an elected official, but I have always voted with the Democrats.”
After Phillip asked him to clarify he was considering leaving his party over Schumer’s decision, Touré fired back, “Yeah, over the inability to figure out what to do in the face of fascism and the rise of Trump.”
