‘Imagine Committing So Many Crimes, You Get Bored at Your Trial’: Jon Stewart Dunks on Trump for Falling Asleep in Court

Former President Donald Trump fell asleep on the first day of his criminal trial in Manhattan on Monday, which naturally made great fodder for Jon Stewart hours later.

Trump had pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments he made to cover up extramarital affairs before the 2016 election.

“After years of anticipation, the first criminal trial of a former president has begun,” Stewart said on The Daily Show. “And by all accounts, it is absolutely riveting.”

The host aired a clip of Jake Tapper interviewing Maggie Haberman earlier in the day. Haberman was inside the courtroom and reported that Trump had fallen asleep during jury selection.

“Forty minutes ago, you wrote an observation that, I was very surprised,” Tapper said, who then quoted Haberman. “‘Trump appears to be sleeping. His head keeps dropping down and his mouth goes slack.’ Tell us about that.”

“Well, Jake, he appeared to be asleep,” she replied.

The clip ended and Stewart assumed a New York accent befitting a mafia capo.

“Hey, Jake, what part of head down, eyes closed, drool coming out of his mouth, do you not f****** get over here?” he cracked. “He’s snoring. He’s doing the honk shoo. He’s doing the ‘mi-mi-mi-mi-mi.'”

Dropping the accent, the host then alluded to the fact that in addition to Trump’s New York trial, the former president is under criminal indictment in three other jurisdictions.

“Imagine committing so many crimes, you get bored at your own trial,” he said before airing a clip of Trump speaking to reporters after court adjourned for the day.

“This is a persecution like never before,” Trump stated. “Nobody’s ever seen anything like it. And again, it’s a case that should have never been brought. It’s an assault on America, and that’s why I’m very proud to be here.”

“Well, it’s true,” Stewart said. “Trump is always very proud to be part of any assault on America.”

Elsewhere in the show, Stewart roasted Trump’s recent “book report” about the Battle of Gettysburg.
