John McCain: This Has Been ‘One of the More Shameful Chapters’ in the Senate’s History
John McCain is clearly glad to have this government shutdown mess behind him, going on the Senate floor today shortly after the bipartisan deal was announced to say the past few weeks have been “one of the more shameful chapters” of the Senate’s history.
McCain has consistently, repeatedly expressed his frustration with the Republican fight on Obamacare that led the country to this point, even telling The New York Times that Republicans need to accept that they lost.
On the Senate floor today, McCain said this has been a trying time for the country that should never have come about in the first place.
“We are now seeing the end of this agonizing odyssey that this body has been put through–but far more importantly, the American people have been put through. It’s one of the more shameful chapters that I have seen in the years that I have spent here in the Senate.”
He touted the bipartisan agreement worked out in the Senate, saying it shows that there are still people in Washington who “won’t let this kind of partisanship cripple this body and injure the American people.”
