Maggie Haberman Says ‘Trump Team Is Delighting In’ Biden Not Dropping Out
CNN commentator and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman said Donald Trump and his team are “delighting in” the fact that President Joe Biden is refusing to drop out of the presidential race.
Biden turned in an all-time stinker in his first debate with Trump nearly two weeks ago. Subsequent interviews have done little to quell severe concerns many Democratic insiders have about the president’s ability to defeat Trump. On Tuesday, Cook Political Report moved five states Biden won in 2020 into Trump’s column.
If Biden steps aside, Vice President Kamala Harris would likely succeed him as the nominee. However, others have floated the idea of an open convention at August’s Democratic National Convention to select a replacement.
Appearing on Tuesday’s AC360 on CNN, Haberman was asked by host Anderson Cooper if Trump prefers to run against Biden or a candidate to be determined.
“Maggie, do you think Donald Trump, I mean, does he want to run against Biden?” the host asked.
Haberman answered:
Yes, I do. I think the idea of not having Biden in the race has been of concern to a number of Trump advisers. Whether they would say that or not, I think, as openly is a different issue. I think that they know what a race against Joe Biden looks like or think they do and they felt obviously very good about what happened in the debate.
You know, a change in that would they didn’t potentially impact their calculus for what the next four months look like. So, the fact that President Biden is digging in and telling his critics in the Democratic Party that he’s not going anywhere is something that the Trump team is delighting in.
