S.E. Cupp Slams ABC for Reviving Roseanne in the First Place: You Can’t ‘Put the Crazy Back in the Bottle’

HLN host S.E. Cupp responded to the Roseanne cancellation news by pointing out that the star comedian has been “an unhinged, mouth-breathing racist, conspiracy monger,” and subsequently slamming ABC for thinking they could “put the crazy back in the bottle.”

The comment — which was part of a lengthy racist and conspiratorial tweetstorm this morning — that got Roseanne Barr fired from the network included the actor comparing former Obama administration advisor Valerie Jarrett, who is a person of color, to an ape.

Cupp, who is a right-leaning cable news host, responded to the racist remark and ABC’s decision to can her show by calling out a few of the many the times in the past in which Barr has voiced similar controversial opinions:

“What’s their excuse for hiring her again? This is a woman who was an early supporter of Birtherism, has compared Muslims to Nazis, took to Twitter regularly to attack citizens both private and public, floated wild conspiracy theories and bullied Trump opponents with racist, homophobic, and antisemitic insults. She infamously dressed up as Hitler in a photo shoot and posed with burnt ‘Jew cookies’ and has promoted anti-Semitic personalities… As risks go, Roseanne came with a ton of them. How did ABC think this was going to go? Suddenly becoming a network star again would put the crazy back in the bottle?… You either knew what you were getting or you hoped no one would care.”

She continued the segment by dropping the famous Maya Angelou quote, which seems to keep finding its way into the news cycle: “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
