S.E. Cupp, Touré Pan Jennifer Granholm’s ‘Weird,’ ‘Out Of Control’ Speech

Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s barnburner speech to the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night brought down the house for convention attendees. However, as the hosts of MSNBC’s The Cycle noted on Friday as they reviewed Granholm’s performance, the speech came off as “weird” for television audiences.

After playing a clip of Granholm’s animated address, a laughing S.E. Cupp called the speech “amazing.”

“It was a mix of Oprah on ‘you get a car’ day, Howard Dean circa 2004 and a little unhinged, but I kind of loved it,” said Cupp.

“The crowd totally ate it up,” Cupp said of Granholm’s “manic” speech. “That does not mean it wasn’t weird.”

“I think you saw how hard it is to get up there and really rock the crowd,” said Touré. “It’s about a controlled passion that you build to…”

“That was not controlled,” said Cupp.

Touré agreed. “She was out of control. She looked possessed. And that’s not what she normally does so it was way out of character,” he said.

Cupp noted that the Gov. Granholm who appears calm and deliberative on NBC’s Meet the Press was a different person the DNC on Thursday night.

Steve Kornacki, who attended the Democratic convention and watched the speech live, said that the reaction from the crowd at the time was electric. However, upon returning home and watching Granholm gesticulating speech as viewers at home saw it, he conceded that he understood why some might react differently to her performance.
