Stevie Wonder ‘Takes a Knee For America’ During Performance

Signed, Kneeled, Delivered.

Musical icon Stevie Wonder stood — or, more accurately, kneeled — in solidarity with the NFL players who have protested police brutality by refusing to stand for the pre-game national anthem.

“Tonight, I’m taking a knee for America. But not just one knee. I’m taking both knees — both knees in prayer for our planet, our future, our leaders of the world and our globe… I wanted to say that prayers before I serve you my musical meal,” said Wonder while performing at the 2017 Global Citizen Festival in New York City.

The crowd responded with a chorus of cheers and applause as both Wonder and his son Kwame Morris took a knee and said a prayer on behalf of both America and the world.

Wonder kneeled as a way of pushing back against President Donald Trump — who has spent the past 24 hours referring to Colin Kaepernick as a “son of a bitch” and calling for the firing of all national anthem protesters.
