SUPERCUT: Fox News Hosts HATED Kendrick Lamar’s Halftime Performance
And now for something equal parts predictable but no less revealing…
The right-leaning Fox News hosts uniformly hated Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance during Sunday’s Super Bowl, which just so happened to have aired on Fox Broadcasting Network.
Lamar was the first hip-hop star to be the sole performer of the halftime appearance and delivered something of a Rorschach test for viewers. His fans found him to offer searing commentary on American pop culture (and not-so-subtle digs at his rival Drake) while many unfamiliar with his back catalog of hits or any working understanding of hip-hop, it seems, were left anywhere on a scale from confused to angry.
The largely conservative opinion hosts of Fox News were decidedly against Lamar’s performance. Sean Hannity found it “awful,” Jeanine Pirro found “Kendall Lamar’s” performance confounding and Will Cain went so far as to suggest the next halftime show should be a Trump rally, though he was clearly joking. (Or was he?)
Cain, Raymond Arroyo, Jesse Watters, and guest Hulk Hogan all suggested a future halftime show featuring country music artists, though while that genre is enjoying a commercially successful moment, it also lacks the broad appeal that hip-hop does, as a few of the Fox Newswers noted
The reaction of Fox News hosts is not at all surprising, and also proves the point of Kendrick Lamar’s artistic stylings and gives some credence to the patriotically themed pastiche of his red, white, and blue performance that may not have been as entirely pro-American as some may have thought on first blush.
