Ted Cruz Laments Backlash for Leading GOP Stunt to Object to Election Results: ‘Everyone Needs to Calm Down’
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) groaned over the criticism he has received ever since he took the lead on the attempts by Congressional Republicans to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.
On Sunday, Cruz gave an interview to Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo where he defended his colleagues’ threat to reject Congress’ certification of the Electoral College results unless they get an audit of the vote. Bartiromo pointed out President Donald Trump’s claims of mass voter fraud got shot down repeatedly before court and before the Justice Department, and she eventually brought up the condemnation Cruz has received from both parties over his maneuver when the odds of success are extremely remote.
“I think everyone needs to calm down,” Cruz responded to the critics. “I think we need to tone down the rhetoric. This is already a volatile situation. It’s like a tinderbox and throwing lit matches into it.”
Cruz continued by lamenting the “hyperbole” and “angry language” he received from Democrats who suggested he be tried for sedition and treason.
“That’s not helpful,” He said. “At a time when we’re pitted against each other, just relax and let’s do our jobs. We have a responsibility to follow the law.”
Cruz went on to defend himself by citing polling on public distrust over the legitimacy of the election. He declined to say anything about how Trump and his allies might be responsible for that by pushing unsubstantiated claims of mass fraud and producing no evidence to back it up.
