Tim Walz Counters Crowd’s ‘Lock Him Up’ Chant At Rally With One Of His Own

Democratic running mate Tim Walz countered rally chants of “lock him up” at the mention of former President Donald Trump with “beat him at the ballot box” during a speech in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Thursday.

The crowd erupted into the chant while the Minnesota governor was discussing the January 6 Capitol rioters of 2021, quoting back Trump referring to the riots in claiming: “we did nothing wrong.” Walz noted that Trump said “we” and not “they” when referring to the rioters.

Trump made the comment in August 2023 when asked if he would take a plea deal in a 2020 election interference case in Georgia, telling reporters: “We don’t take plea deals. We did nothing wrong.”

The crowd jeered, and a chant of “lock him up” began to rise, a take on the chant Trump started at his own rallies when running against Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Seeing this, Walz paused before loudly countering with his own chant into the mic, repeating: “Beat him at the ballot box!”
