Trump Catches Whitmer off Guard Again by Inviting Her on Stage: ‘I Hadn’t Planned to Speak’

President Donald Trump once again caught Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer off guard at an event – this time by inviting her to speak on stage.

On Tuesday, Whitmer joined Trump at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison, Michigan, where the president touted his record in the first 100 days of his tumultuous second term. Also present was Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who spoke briefly before Trump gestured to Whitmer to take to the lectern.

“Well, I hadn’t planned to speak,” she began. “But on behalf of all of the military men and women who serve our country and serve so honorably on behalf of the state of Michigan, I am really damn happy we’re here to celebrate this recapitalization at Selfridge. It’s crucial for the Michigan economy, it’s crucial for the men and women here, for our homeland security, and our future. So, thank you, I am so grateful that this announcement was made today. And I appreciate all the work. Thank you.”

At the event, Whitmer donned a camouflage hat, which was a more natural look than the binders she used to obscure her face earlier this month. The governor was at the White House on April 12 as part of a bipartisan delegation seeking federal money for Selfridge. CNN reported at the time that Whitmer believed she was at the White House simply for a policy discussion, but that turned into a public appearance after she was ushered into the Oval Office, where reporters were present. Appearing mortified by the unexpected publicity, the governor held up multiple binders to obscure her face in a photo that predictably went viral.
