As he spoke to the National Guard Association today, Donald Trump tore into Hillary Clinton for calling a portion of his supporters the “basket of deplorables.”
While Clinton has somewhat apologized for her generalization, Trump has been slamming her recently for saying half of his voters have embraced the various objectionable qualities attributed to the alt-right. On Monday afternoon, Trump said he was “deeply alarmed and shocked” that Clinton could “demonize” voters, and he demanded she retract her words.
“She divides people into baskets as though they were objects, not human beings,” Trump said. “If Hillary Clinton will not retract her comments in full I don’t see how she can credibly campaign any further.”
Trump said that Clinton “revealed her true thoughts” with her remarks, as he continued to trash her for acting like she’s above the law and the American people. Trump insisted that his supporters are not racist, and he talked at length about controversies such as the pay-for-play allegations that have marked the connection between the State Department and the Clinton Foundation.
