WATCH: Accused School Shooter Appears in Court, Held Without Bond on 17 Counts of Murder
Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who was booked on 17 counts of premeditated murder for Wednesday’s horrific shooting at the school, appeared in court this afternoon for the first time related to the charges.
Prosecutors confirmed to the judge that they were requesting Cruz be held without bond over the counts — stating that Cruz had fled the scene and had additional ammunition with him at the time he was apprehended.
“Your honor, the defense has no arguments at this time,” Cruz’s defense responded. “We’ll defer until further court proceedings. His right to remain silent and that notification relates to any law enforcement agencies involved in this case, both at a state and federal level.”
“Okay, I have reviewed the probable cause affidavit. Mr. Cruz, filed in your case,” the judge noted. “I find probable cause and the proof of guilt to be evident or the presumption great. Therefore, Mr. Cruz, you’ll be held without bond until further order of the court.”
